Man, What does God in the Bible have to say about pandemic diseases and sicknesses?

Kinda Curious on That? Got Questions?

Yikes, so much hate and weirdness in this world here. Various outbreaks of pandemic diseases, such as Ebola or the coronavirus, have prompted many to ask why God even allows—or even causes—pandemic diseases …..and whether such illnesses are a sign of the end times.
God ain’t mad at you, caught off guard, anxious, surprised, or mean to people–He loves you and has a good plan. He didn’t bring sin with the fall out into this world.
The Bible, particularly the Old Testament, describes numerous occasions when God brought plagues and diseases on His people and on His enemies “to make you see my power” (Exodus 9:14, 16). He used plagues on Egypt to force Pharaoh to free the Israelites from bondage, while sparing His people from being affected by them (Exodus 12:13; 15:26), thus indicating His sovereign control over diseases and other afflictions.

God also warned His people of the consequences of disobedience, including plagues (Leviticus 26:21, 25). On two occasions, God destroyed 14,700 people and 24,000 people for various acts of disobedience (Numbers 16:49 and 25:9). After giving the Mosaic Law, God commanded the people to obey it or suffer many evils, including something that sounds like Ebola: “The Lord will strike you with wasting disease, with fever and inflammation … which will plague you until you perish” (Deuteronomy 28:22). These are just a few examples of many plagues and diseases God caused.

It’s sometimes hard to imagine our loving and merciful God displaying such wrath and anger toward His people. But God’s punishments always have the goal of repentance and restoration. In 2 Chronicles 7:13–14, God said to Solomon, “When I shut up the heavens so that there is no rain, or command locusts to devour the land or send a plague among my people, if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” Here we see God using disaster to draw His people to Himself, to bring about repentance and the desire to come to Him as children to their heavenly Father.

In the New Testament, Jesus healed “every disease and every sickness,” as well as plagues in the areas He visited (Matthew 9:35; 10:1; Mark 3:10). Just as God chose to use plagues and disease to show His power to the Israelites, Jesus healed as an exhibition of the same power to verify that He was truly the Son of God. He gave the same healing power to the disciples to verify their ministry (Luke 9:1). God still allows sickness for His own purposes, but sometimes disease, even worldwide pandemics, are simply the result of living in a fallen world. There is no way to determine whether or not a pandemic has a specific spiritual cause, but we do know that God has sovereign control over all things (Romans 11:36) and will work all things together for the good of those who know and love Him (Romans 8:28).

The spread of sicknesses such as Ebola and the coronavirus is a foretaste of pandemics that will be part of the end times. Jesus referred to future plagues associated with the last days (Luke 21:11). The two witnesses of Revelation 11 will have power “to strike the earth with every kind of plague as often as they want” (Revelation 11:6). Seven angels will wield seven plagues in a series of final, severe judgments described in Revelation 16.

The appearance of pandemic diseases may or may not be tied to God’s specific judgment of sin. It could also simply be the result of living in a fallen world. Since no one knows the time of Jesus’ return, we must be careful about saying global pandemics are proof that we are living in the end times. For those who do not know Jesus Christ as Savior, disease should be a reminder that life on this earth is tenuous and can be lost at any moment. As bad as pandemics are, hell will be worse. The Christian, however, has the assurance of salvation and the hope of eternity because of the blood of Christ shed on the cross for us (Isaiah 53:5; 2 Corinthians 5:21; Hebrews 9:28).

How should Christians respond to pandemic diseases? First, do fear or panic. God is in control. The Bible says the equivalent of “do not fear” over 300 times. Second, be wise. Take reasonable steps to avoid exposure to the disease and to protect and provide for your family. Third, look for opportunities for ministry. Often when people are fearful for their lives, they are more willing to have conversations about eternity. Be bold and compassionate in your sharing of the Gospel, always speaking the truth in love (Ephesians 4:15).

We have to work now so Ebola “is not the world’s next AIDS” said the CDC director yesterday...

..in a top-level forum* in Washington, D.C. "The Ebola outbreak is unlike anything he's seen since the AIDS epidemic."

Been musing over his words some. You know it's no time to live in fear, but just imagine a person knowin' the cure (if one did) while happily livin' out their days as a healthy vibrant life right in front of terminally ill Ebola-ridden people.. but never even tellin' em how they could be cured from that sickness!
It kinda makes me think of the Church and our duty. Makes me think of the love we are called to express.

There is a time to despise sin, sickness, Satan, and selfishness ...and that's every single day! There is "a time to be silent and a time to speak. A time to love and a time to hate; a time for war and a time for peace." Ecclesiastes 3:7

"God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life." 1 John 5:11

Jesus came the first time so that we each could enjoy His peace internally on this earth and then through all eternity. Jesus is coming the second time so that we each could also enjoy His peace externally on this earth in the millennium and through all eternity. Think about it. Do you have His peace inside that passes all understanding? It ain't a worldly sorta peace.

He really is returnin' soon, we need to be ready.. and it all starts with a right vertical relationship that leads to right horizontal relationships.

Well, having a sin problem is of course much worse than having an Ebola problem because someone with Ebola could still be forgiven during those 18 days of sickness and then go on to heaven.. or they could even possibly survive and have some more years added.

All have a sin issue that quickly needs to be addressed. Christ (the Jesus we read about through the Bible..) is the only Cure for us sinners and all can know Him ..if believers don't remain silent. This is the time to live clean and free ..exemplary.. and to open our mouths so that others can go free.. yes, so they can be cured spiritually.

The Bible says, "Live an exemplary life among the natives so that your actions will refute their prejudices. Then they'll be won over to God's side and be there to join in the celebration when He arrives. Make the Master proud of you by being good citizens." 1 Peter 2:12-13 msg.

The Scriptures make it clear that our days here are numbered. There is a day coming, and who among us really knows when that will be?.. when we are outta here.

We as believers aren't to worry about that at all. We are taught to live sold-out to Jesus and simply trust that our caring Father knows when that day will be. He'll take care of all we need.

This doesn't mean that we all take up base jumping off of cliffs, or try swimming with great whites, or start entering the apartments of those with Ebola.. putting our lives at unnecessary risk. But this does mean that we each recognize the fact that our lives here totally belong to God. He is in charge and we rest in His loving hands.

"Since his days are determined, the number of his months is with You; You have appointed his limits, so that he cannot pass." Job 14:5

Nice thought—I like that. It means that until God is finished with us here, nothin' will happen to us. Yes, it means that we could indeed be mocked, or spit upon, or struck, or persecuted but we are basically indestructible (can't be killed physically) until the Lord wants us to come home.

That's so comforting to know. But it also speaks to the fact that when our number is up, it's up. No mortal or Obamacare can reverse that. When that day comes, there is nothing we can do to turn the clock back. It also means we have such limited time to serve the Lord while we're here so there needs to be a sense of urgency about what we say and do. We have the Cure (the Gospel of Jesus Christ) and many around us still do not. Real love says do something good a.s.a.p. to get those spiritually ill within reach of the Cure they need most.

God loves you. He sees and thinks about you a whole lot! You are on His heart and mind today. He greatly values you, and wants to protect you. Your life isn't a mistake. Don't let it be in vain. He can provide, and guide, and bless… but if physical death came for you today (and I'm not wishing that for anyone..), would you be ready to enter heaven as your home? Hell wasn't made for people. It was made for fallen angels so it's uber-dumb and fully illogical when people opt to go there.

God is so SO merciful and has better things—He wants you with Him instead. If you are not ready, you would face a certain judgment because God is also holy and just—He can't deny Himself. Sadly not all choose the Lord's way even though eternal Judgment is not what he wants to happen to human. Please choose Life right now! The Lord will forgive and empower us for His Task. facebook.com/shareJesus
