WHEN GODLY MEN STAND UP LIKE GOD WANTS THEM TO
The Cost of Prayerless, Passive Leadership Is Too High
There is a quiet erosion that can happen in a home, a church, and eventually a culture: men stop praying, stop taking responsibility, stop speaking truth, and stop standing faithfully where God has placed them.
The damage is rarely immediate. A neglected foundation does not announce its collapse on the day the first crack appears. But eventually, what was once strong begins to lean.
When men abandon godly responsibility, the cost can reach far beyond the man himself.
Homes can lose direction.
Children can lose living examples of courage and integrity.
Churches can lose spiritually qualified leaders.
Communities can become more vulnerable to confusion and moral compromise.
And truth can become increasingly difficult to hear when those who know it refuse to speak it.
Yet we must be careful here: biblical manhood is not domination, machismo, political power, or having the loudest voice in the room. It is Christlike responsibility.
A biblical man does not lead because he is more valuable than a woman. Men and women are equally made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26–27). Rather, Scripture gives men particular responsibilities in marriage and, in the qualifications for church elders, spiritual leadership within the church (Ephesians 5:25–33; 1 Timothy 3:1–7; Titus 1:5–9).
And the model is not a tyrant.
The Jesus of the Bible is the ultimate model for you and me.
Jesus possessed all authority, yet He washed feet.
He could command, yet He served.
He could have demanded His rights, yet He laid down His life.
He told His disciples that worldly rulers “lord it over” people, but then gave them a radically different pattern: greatness in His kingdom is expressed through servanthood (Mark 10:42–45).
That changes everything.

The erosion of godly leadership often begins long before anyone notices it.
It begins in the secret place.
A man becomes too busy to pray.
Then too distracted to read Scripture.
Then too comfortable to repent.
Then too passive to lead.
Eventually, he may still occupy the position, but he has abandoned the spiritual posture necessary to fulfill it.
A man cannot faithfully lead people toward a God he is neglecting himself.
Jesus Himself regularly withdrew to pray (Luke 5:16). Before choosing the Twelve, He spent the night in prayer (Luke 6:12–13). If the sinless Son of God deliberately sought the Father in prayer, no Christian man should imagine that he can safely live on spiritual autopilot.
Charles Spurgeon put the matter forcefully when he urged Christian workers to begin their work “on their knees,” emphasizing that private prayer is essential to spiritual strength.
That is not weakness.
Prayer is where biblical strength begins.
“Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love.”
1 Corinthians 16:13–14
Notice the balance.
Stand firm.
Be strong.
And love.
Biblical strength without love becomes harshness.
Love without courage can become passivity.
Biblical manhood requires both courage and compassion.
WHAT DOES A GODLY MAN ACTUALLY LOOK LIKE?
He is not necessarily the richest man.
He is not necessarily the strongest man.
He is not necessarily the most charismatic man.
He may never stand behind a pulpit.
He may never possess a title.
He may never become famous.
But he knows whose man he is.
A godly man submits himself to Christ, seeks holiness, controls his appetites, accepts responsibility, serves rather than demands to be served, protects those entrusted to his care, provides faithfully according to his circumstances, loves sacrificially, and leads by example. These themes are consistent with the biblical pattern summarized in the resources you supplied.
He does not say, “Everyone needs to follow me.”
He says, “Follow me as I follow Christ.”
See 1 Corinthians 11:1.
That is a very different kind of authority.
LEADERSHIP IS NOT CONTROL
The Christian husband is not called to become the dictator of his home.
He is called to love his wife as Christ loved the church and gave Himself for her (Ephesians 5:25).
That means biblical headship is cruciform.
The cross becomes the shape of Christian leadership.
A husband who says, “I am the head of this house,” but refuses to sacrifice, listen, repent, serve, protect, and love like Christ has misunderstood biblical headship.
The biblical leader goes first in sacrifice, not first in privilege.
He does not use Scripture as a weapon against his wife.
He uses Scripture first as a mirror for himself.
He asks:
Am I praying for my family?
Am I setting an example of repentance?
Do my children see me worship God when nobody is watching?
Do I speak about Christ at home, not merely at church?
Does my wife experience my leadership as sacrificial love?
When I am wrong, do I humble myself and say, “I was wrong. Please forgive me”?
Those questions reveal more about a man's spiritual leadership than his title ever could.
Peter likewise commands husbands to live with their wives “in an understanding way,” showing honor to them as fellow heirs of God's grace (1 Peter 3:7). Biblical authority can never be separated from biblical honor.
THE CHURCH NEEDS MEN WHO WILL SERVE
The New Testament does give the church a pattern of qualified male elders overseeing and shepherding the congregation (1 Timothy 3:1–7; Titus 1:5–9; Acts 20:17, 28; 1 Peter 5:1–4). The emphasis, however, is not on male prestige.
It is on GODLY character.
An elder must be above reproach, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, spiritually mature, and able to manage his household well (1 Timothy 3:1–7).
In other words:
God's qualification for leadership begins with character before competence.
A man may have a powerful personality and still be spiritually unqualified.
He may have a large platform and a small prayer life.
He may be impressive publicly and careless privately.
God is not impressed by the size of a man's platform if the character underneath it cannot bear the weight.
And church leadership is not a one-man show. The New Testament presents elders as shepherds who watch over the flock, while servants minister to practical needs.
The church does not need more Christian celebrities.
It needs more faithful men.
ABOUT THE EARLY CHURCH
It is often said:
“The early church had no buildings, no money, no social media, and no political influence, yet they turned the world upside-down.” @KurtwVs
The first part of this needs qualification.
The early church was flawed. All churches are. The early Christians did not of course have modern church campuses, social media tech, or the institutional influence available to churches today. But Scripture does not portray them as having literally no money or no material resources at all. God led people to give and support their soul-winning efforts. The Jerusalem believers in love voluntarily shared possessions (not as Communists), and some had sufficient resources to sell property and give the proceeds to the apostles for the needs of others (Acts 2:44–45; 4:32–35). They also met both publicly and in homes (Acts 2:46; 5:42; 20:7–8). The church today needs to grow larger (numerically) and smaller numerically, enjoying fellowship as all of the Bible is taught.
So the stronger, more accurate point is this:
The first Christians did not possess the machinery of modern influence. Yet God used ordinary believers, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to proclaim the risen Christ with extraordinary courage.
And their enemies recognized the effect.
Acts 17:6 records the accusation that these Christians had “turned the world upside down.”
Their secret was not technology.
It was not political power.
It was not impressive architecture.
It was the risen Christ, the Word of God, the Holy Spirit, prayer, courageous witness, sacrificial love, and obedient discipleship.
That is still God's method.
THE CULTURE DOES NOT NEED CHRISTIAN MEN WHO ARE LOUDER. IT NEEDS MEN WHO ARE FAITHFUL.
Interestingly, current Barna research does not support the simplistic claim that American men are simply disappearing from church. Barna reported in 2025 that men were attending church at higher rates than women in its research, with men at 43% and women at 36% in its reported measure. In 2026, Barna described this as a significant reversal of a long-standing pattern.
That is worth celebrating.
But attendance is not the same thing as discipleship.
Barna's research has also found substantial gaps in Christian discipleship and spiritual relationships. One 2022 study reported that 39% of Christians surveyed were not engaged in discipleship at all.
So perhaps the question is not merely:
“Are men coming back to church?”
Perhaps the deeper question is:
“Are men becoming more like Christ?”
Because God did not call men merely to occupy seats.
He called Christians to follow Jesus.
To make disciples.
To love their wives.
To raise their children in the discipline and instruction of the Lord.
To serve the church.
To care for the vulnerable.
To resist temptation.
To speak truth.
To love their neighbors.
To pursue holiness.
To stand firm without becoming arrogant.
To be courageous without becoming cruel.
To possess authority without becoming authoritarian, and...
To lead without forgetting that they, too, are sheep who desperately need the Shepherd.
THE WORLD DOES NOT NEED MEN WHO WANT TO BE KINGS
It needs men who understand the King.
There is a profound difference.
The flesh says:
“Serve me.”
Christ says:
“Follow Me.”
The fleshly nature and world system says:
“Protect your reputation.”
Christ says:
“Deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Me.”
(Mark 8:34)
The flesh says:
“Make everyone respect you.”
Christ says:
“Humble yourself.”
(Philippians 2:3–8)
The flesh says:
“Use authority to get your way.”
Christ demonstrates authority through sacrificial service.
That is biblical manhood.
And that kind of man may never become famous.
But his wife may sleep more peacefully because of his faithfulness.
His children may learn what repentance looks like because they watched their father apologize.
A younger man may discover what Christian courage looks like because an older man took him under his wing.
A church may become stronger because a quiet man faithfully prayed, served, gave, encouraged, taught, and stood firm.
A neighbor may eventually come to Christ because a Christian man consistently treated him with grace and truth.
That is not small.
That is kingdom work.
Martin Luther's great hymn reminds the believer where the battle ultimately belongs:
“A mighty fortress is our God.”
The hymn points us away from confidence in human strength and toward Christ, the One who wins the battle.
So, men of God:
Pray.
Stand.
Serve.
Protect.
Provide faithfully.
Love sacrificially.
Teach your children.
Honor women.
Shepherd what God has entrusted to you.
Defend truth without becoming hateful.
Repent quickly when you fail.
And above all, follow Jesus.
Because biblical leadership is not ultimately about getting people beneath you.
It is about getting yourself beneath the Headship (of His church) and lordship of Christ.
The strongest Christian man is not the man who makes everyone else bow.
He is the man who has learned to bow before Jesus.
And when a generation of men gets serious about that kind of manhood, homes can become places of discipleship, churches can become places of spiritual maturity, and communities can encounter something increasingly rare...
..men whose strength is governed by holiness, whose authority is restrained by love, and whose lives point beyond themselves to Jesus Christ.
That is the kind of leadership worth recovering.
That is the kind of manhood worth teaching, and...
