When “All Things Working Together For Good” Really Hurts!

When A Believer's Loved One Dies In Front Of Their Eyes .. Unimaginable Ouch..

..Or It's Just Way Too Close For Comfort As Those We Care About Fade.. Almost Die ..And Yet All Things Are Working Together For Good!

Really? Some Nights Romans 8:28 Has Felt Too Heavy To Hold On To.

Let's Hold Onto Jesus Through It. God Is Close..Totally Trustworthy And His Word Remains True.

I remember when my second Nathan son died, and when my mom almost died from Covid. She came very close.

Glad my other loved ones haven't passed -- am thinking about other families today.

The NICU at 3 a.m. is no place for some two-dollar shiny bumper-sticker type of theology.

While a baby is gasping for air, please remember this, believer, a bright smile with a random partial quote of a verse can often feel like a band-aid slapped over a bullet wound.

What does it mean that we should be quick to listen and slow to speak (James 1:19)?

How should Christian parents handle the death of a child?

How do you or I find comfort and peace when we've lost a loved one?

What really happens after death?

Where did Old Testament believers go when they physically died?

Can I ask God to deliver a message to a loved one who has died?

What sort of condolences should a Christian give someone struggling or mourning?

What does it mean to walk through the valley of the shadow of death?

How can I overcome the fear of death?

Is it biblical to say 'rest in peace' (RIP) in regard to those who have lost a loved one?

How can a believer find comfort after the death of a parent?

Do believers immediately go to heaven when they die?

What does the Bible say about grief?

How can I find comfort when an unsaved loved one has died?

Context, context please, Bible context -- important! Romans 8:28 doesn’t tell us that all things happening at us are good.

Overwhelmed with parental suffering, dead children aren’t good, ventilators aren’t inherently good (might be good for someone later), and that intense grief with a mother’s empty arms is never good. But God, His unchanging promises, and living Word are still good ..and He is there for you and me.

All those things we believers experience that are not good—yes, even these things—can indeed be woven into God’s greater plan for eternal good. I don't reject any of Romans 8, the whole Bible is true. Read what it actually says for yourself.

Paul penned Romans 8:28–29 not from a TV studio, but from a cold cell, knowing execution was near. The Greek word synergeō means “to work together,” like separate forces combining to produce something neither could alone. God doesn’t call the wreckage good—He steps into it, bends it, redeems it. His “good” often looks like faith purified in fire, character hammered into steel, and ministry birthed from misery.

This promise is for “those who love God”—for the saved, not for mere casual Sunday posers or CEO tourists (mere Christmas and Easter Only church goers), but for active growing, ongoing lovers of Christ (children of the Father). And His good is measured not in temporary comfort, but in eternal conformity to Christlike character (lots of people don't ever read the following verse - Romans 8:29).

Blake’s NICU fight has been demolishing much for his family.

Jobs disrupted. Plans shattered. Nightmares, and sleep is gone—but this ongoingg fight has also revealed what desperate intercession, earnest prayer sounds like. It's revealing what trusting God looks like when all human control is gone. That’s the “good.” Not some sweet fairy-tale like ending, but a soul anchored in God's living Word (Jesus) as storms roar on.

Joseph’s brothers hated and were out to kill him, but they sold him instead. Paul was beaten and shipwrecked. Neither man’s pain was good in itself—but God forged something good from it all.

The best rescue and salvation for people is God's work (Genesis 50:20; Acts 9:16). “We are more than conquerors,” Paul wrote, because nothing at all—not death, demons, or dangerous disaster—can sever us from the love of God in Christ (See Romans 8:35–39).

Charles Spurgeon warned, “The world does not read the Bible; the world reads Christians.”

When pain comes, the world watches to see if our theology holds out. A God who only works when our preferences are met is not God—He’s an assistant. That's not the God of the Bible. But the true God can take hell’s worst attacks and weaponize those so to speak.. for heaven’s purposes.

"Your kingdom come, Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. 11Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.." Matt. 6:11-12

This isn’t divine manipulation; it’s divine infiltration. God stepping into the ashes, not always to remove the fire, but to walk with us in it.

Again Barna research shows that nearly 65% of Christians say their deepest spiritual growth came through.. not around.. hardship—not through ease. That’s not surprising. Hymn writer William Cowper, who knew both depression and faith..this might sound kind of religious, but he put it like this:

"God moves in a mysterious way,
His wonders to perform;
He plants His footsteps in the sea,
And rides upon the storm."

Remember when Jesus went boardless and walked on the sea? So, believer, keep clinging to Christ in and through all storms!

Seek Him first when the monitors scream and your pastor walks in, know this: "the good" may not at all look like what you prayed for, but Jesus is good, considerate, kind and he is there for you! He can hold your hand and help you through this mess.

Being saved and walkin' in the Lord doesn't change what you have to deal with in this world. It changes how you (with the Bible, the Holy Spirit's anointed wisdom), deal with it (unto God's glory and for the benefit of other lost and saved people). The circumstances around us often change, the people change, the fickle feelings change, the methods change, but our loving God, His good promises, and His faithful word never do change. His loyalty, greater wisdom, and compassionate agape love are completely consistent. Let's also be consistent and share His message!

Spiritually reborn Christians (yeah, saved sinners) have nothing to be puffed up or smug about. We were freely forgiven - didn't earn or merit that. Could if we tried! We are not at all righteous people from ourselves.. those people trying to correct the unrighteous around us (those we hope will come to Christ).
"We're like one beggar telling another beggar (even if we don't beg) where to find bread." ~ R.C. Sproul
Are you hungry for healthy Bread? Time spent trying to change or reform sinners.. by any forgiven sinners (imputed with free righteousness) is a waste of time. Just win them (witness intentionally evangelize on purpose).. and not win em to self, but to Jesus.
You know that God freely imputes His righteousness to humble repentant believers through faith in His Son, Jesus Christ. Simple as that, and good reason to gratefully rejoice.. with no good works added by them. We work from salvation not to merit or gain it. God credits (freely, it can't be earned).. the righteousness of Christ to those who trust in Him, rather than judging them based on their own flawed actions.

"And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose. For whom He foreknew, He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son, that He might be the firstborn among many brethren." Romans 8:28-29 nkjv

I know there really are unseen and seen consequences for breaking God's laws by sinning. I used to be lost as a lizard who enjoyed doing some sins. Yes, some of it can be fun for a season.

Sickness is a consequence of sin, but many sick people suffer here due to other people's sinning. Now I often think when a sinner gets physically sick or diseased, then God often allows a righteous person to also get that way too.. and hopefully that sick sinner will observe God supernatually helping the sick child of God and then choose to become a child of God in Christ as well.

"’For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.’ While the people were listening to this, Jesus proceeded to tell them a parable, because He was near Jerusalem and they thought the kingdom of God would appear imminently. So He said, ‘A man of noble birth went to a distant country to lay claim to his kingship and then return.." Luke 19:10-12a

Study Saul, who caused pai,n turned into Paul. Study his life again. It's a testament to how God really does works all things (even the bad things we experience) together for good.

Paul suffered too. Remember his shipwrecks, his beatings, his imprisonment, his murder attempts, his temporary blindness, and more—all within God’s plan to spread the gospel to lost Jews and Gentiles (see Acts 9:16 and 2 Corinthians 11:24–27).

Through it all, God remained sovereign and steadfastly working to bring about good and glorious results for people.

I love the Lord and Romans 8! After promising that God works all things together for our the good, Romans 8 concludes with the wonderful fact that God trumps everything that comes against Him and His children who belong to Him.

The reborn Christian is assured that zero, null, nada, nothing can ever separate them from God’s agape love:

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? ..No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord” Romans 8:35–39.

God is WAY powerful -- All-powerful. His love is everlasting, and His wisdom is wonderful and infinite. It doesn’t really matter who or what attempts to come against you to thwart God’s plan; no one and nothing can. See the context and think about where Paul is right now. All humans will exist forever in one of two places (God's holy Heaven or in Hell), but Christians will enjoy abundant and everlasting life. God will work all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.

Our decision to repent and believe in Jesus (the Father's only Solution for you and me) makes all the difference. His forgiveness and new birth are free -- it's a privilege and huge reward of faith to align our will with God’s plan. He's still alive and trustworthy!

Does He allow a pattern here? (Prayfully look at the context):

  • “Though He slay me, yet will I trust in Him” (Job 13:15). Remember how it turned out for Job?

  • “We are more than conquerors through Him who loved us” (Romans 8:37). Paul still enjoys an abundant life and lives on minus chains.

  • “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20). Hurting, rejected, sold off, accused, and jailed, Joseph received God's comfort and then became a comforter and provider for his brothers. (vv. 20-25).

Joseph firsthand knew painful betrayal, slavery, false pointing of the finger like the devil likes to do, and prison life. Job knew unthinkable loss. Paul knew harsh shipwrecks, lashes on the back, hunger, and heavy chains. None of it was good in and of itself, yet God’s own good emerged like gold from the heated fire of suffering.

Spurgeon said, “When you can’t trace His hand, trust His heart.”

Christians in and near Ecuador on On January 8 in 1956 were struggling to reconcile the vicious violence there with the sovereignty of God.

Jim Elliot, Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Peter Fleming, and Roger Youderian where waiting on a sandy riverbank, all eager to become friends and make contact with the Huaorani people. Then these guys got murdered - all five lay dead. Nothing about that was good!

Jim Elliot had written in his journal years before:

“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”

It took years to see what God would do there with those people.

The NICU is a place where those of this world are sometimes reading other hurting Christians (among other places)—and they want to see if our theology holds up under the fluorescent light and the shadow of death. Some who watch us hope we fail in order to somehow gain comfort from that.

I know statistics bear this out: Barna Research found that 65% of Christians point to seasons of pain as the turning points of their spiritual growth and going forward. Conversely, less than 15% attribute their deepest growth to seasons of ease. In other words, hardship, not comfort, often becomes the forge of faith.

Seems like most people who come to Christ to get right with the Father do so during times of pain, struggle, and suffering rather than during times of ease and prosperity.

William Cowper, no stranger to hurt, fears and some despair, wrote in his hymn:

"Judge not the Lord by feeble sense,
But trust Him for His grace;
Behind a frowning providence
He hides a smiling face."

Every single experience God gives to us believers is the perfect preparation for what's ahead -- that future that only He can see.

Helen Keller is a Christian who knew lifelong limitation -- she once said, “Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened.”

Even professional secular voices sometimes stumble upon this same principle.

And yet for the believer, there is something even richer than character at stake—it is conformity to Christ, eternal reward, and the unshakable presence of God who will one day wipe every tear from our eyes (See Revelation 21:4).

This is why Paul can write, “Our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory” (2 Corinthians 4:17). Light? Momentary? Only if you measure it against eternity.

This isn’t about divine manipulation—it’s about divine infiltration. Into our world where we live.

Jesus did that..came and lived here for us all.

And God steps into the fire today, even, not always to put it out, but to walk with us in it, like He did with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego (See Daniel 3). Sometimes His “good” is seen in the miracle of deliverance, other times in the miracle of endurance on through (with Jesus leading).

"When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie,
My grace, all-sufficient, shall be thy supply;
The flame shall not hurt thee; I only design
Thy dross to consume and thy gold to refine.

—John Rippon, How Firm a Foundation."

Man, how do adults even sleep near a NICU?

Those monitors blink a lot with the steady rhythm of delicate lives hanging by such fragile strands, their digital beeps the heartbeat of hope—and sometimes, putting out sounds of great loss.

The hospital shadows stretch across those clean white-tiled-walls, with the scent of antiseptic lingering in the air nearby.. like a cold reminder that we all are mortal and life here is brief.

Our world is filled with the brokenness from sin, the ravages of rebellion,  and we see it daily.

I think I was born disobedient, loved to do that, so I needed to be born again. Now as a believer, I loathe what I used to love (that party lifestyle etc) and love what I used to loathe (Bible study, prayer, worship, fellowship with Christians in a healthy church). Man, God has put a new nature inside of me.

Hey believer, "continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling,  for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose." Philippians 2:12-13 nic

"But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him." Hebrews 11:6 nkjv

Too many people are fighting against brokenness in their bodies today. It's so sad to see --  some of them are too small or too weak to fight for themselves! Pray like you mean it cuz you really do!

So when the monitors blare and the chaplain’s footsteps fall heavy on steril linoleum tiles, remember that: God is light and there is no darkness in Him. He’s “good” even when things don't look like what you prayed for. Let Jesus in.. let Him live big in you. He gets it, all of it, and His grace is sufficient for you. He and His good plan we can trust, even right here, even right now.

Are we supposed to count it all joy even when in a storm, in times of testing, or in a hard-core trial? (See James 1:2)? Uhh yep, we must evaluate these difficulties in life with eyes of faith and see them in light of Christ’s good purpose for us.

1.) What are the protecting storms? That’s the kind of storm the disciples experienced on the Sea of Galilee (this time from a real storm out in nature).

Remember the time after Jesus performed His most popular miracle to date: Free lunch, the feeding of the five thousand. The people really loved that miracle. Raising people from the dead?--Jesus did that! So wonderfully-awesome. Restoring the sight and hearing to people?..Jesus also pulled those off to help people He deeply cared about (He still cares about us all). That indeed was very incredible. But free munchies at lunchtime? Wow, now we’re really talking! Why do we seem to like good grub so much?

Then the crowd wanted to make Jesus king by force. So Jesus said to His disciples, basically in effect, “Hey gang, go get into the boat. We’re headed out of here and just in time.”

He has a perfect time for everything, so Jesus delivered His disciples from what would have been a lot of adulation etc, which would have created a lot of problems for many. So they went through a protective storm--it was God's will for them.

2.) What are the correcting storms? They are used to correct us. Ever caused yourself some challenges by personal sin, or from say from forgetting something important, or from missing something imperative after you causally aimed for it? Forget not to pray for, and then act (do your part only) regarding what you need.

We basically bring these types of tough storms upon ourselves and reap the consequences of our actions. Jonah bailed out. Remember the great fish and the small worm? Jonah ran the other way from His calling. Perhaps you've run away from Jesus and what he has for you?

Jonah didn't like the people he was called to minister to because they were very cruel sinners. Many hated those killers. So he was in a corrective storm. It was his fault. He brought it upon himself.

God gave Jonah a second chance and then the greatest awakening of all history.

Please never try to run away from God and His specific will for you. He delights to use and bless you. Instead, sprint to Jesus. God is there for ya. And if you need a second chance cuz you fell flat on your face, then why don’t you simply ask for one. Ask for forgiveness and forgive people in your heart. God's grace is amazing!

3.) What are the perfecting storms that come from the tough trials of life? It can be from emotional hardships in life that come from other types of hardships ..cuz face it, this life here can get hard quick. I mean these are from tough trials and opposition that God allows in our way, for us to go through for growth and learning sake. Sometimes these events seem so random too, but they never are. God has a plan. He loves us too much to leave us the way we are. Father knows best and wants us all to grow up having balanced spiritual maturity.

Jesus said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you” (Hebrews 13:5 nkjv).

In Romans 8:28 the Bible says that “all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose” (nkjv).

A perfecting storm, Kurt, what's that one more time? This is when God allows hardships into our lives to make us stronger spiritually. We can profit from trials. Sometimes we do profit earlier and sometimes we foolishly opt to gain from them later if we are thick-headed and stubborn. Job went through a perfecting storm--he and others got SO blessed when he simply chose to go do what God told him to do.

The Bible says, “When your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing” (James 1:3–4 nlt).

"Then Jonah prayed to his God from the belly of the fish. He prayed: “In trouble, deep trouble, I prayed to GOD. He answered me. From the belly of the grave I cried, ‘Help!’ You heard my cry. You threw me into ocean’s depths, into a watery grave, With ocean waves, ocean breakers crashing over me. I said, ‘I’ve been thrown away, thrown out, out of your sight. I’ll never again lay eyes on your Holy Temple.’ Ocean gripped me by the throat. The ancient Abyss grabbed me and held tight. My head was all tangled in seaweed at the bottom of the sea where the mountains take root. I was as far down as a body can go, and the gates were slamming shut behind me forever—Yet you pulled me up from that grave alive, O GOD, my God! When my life was slipping away, I remembered GOD, And my prayer got through to you, made it all the way to your Holy Temple. Those who worship hollow gods, god-frauds, walk away from their only true love. But I’m worshiping you, GOD, calling out in thanksgiving! And I’ll do what I promised I’d do! Salvation belongs to GOD!” Jonah 2:1-9 msg

In Jonah chapter 2 the Bible says, “The Lord spoke to the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land” (verse 10). The big fish hurled. It barfed the believer, launched its lunch, puked up the prophet. The whale basically cruised on up to the shoreline and regurgitated Jonah onto the sand and gravel. I've had that happen at Salt Creek beach before minus the whale.

"Then the Lord ordered the fish to spit Jonah out onto the beach." Jonah 2:10 nlt

God is compassionate and once again called out to Jonah to go bring His message to the people of Nineveh and it happened. This time Jonah obeyed. What has God asked you to go do? He's asked us all to be involved in His Great Commission. Do we keep His Greatest and 2nd Great Commandments?

Jonah finally got around to applying the Word of God.. to obeying the Lord in order to become a blessing for that people. Man, a little bit of obedience before the Lord sure can bring in a whole lot of blessing for others! He does that, and we willingly listen up.

Then probably the greatest spiritual awakening in all of human history took place there.

Jonah had been losing hope (see Jonah 2:7) but the God of hope helped him through.

We live in a collapsing culture today. I think a lot of people in our world are starting to lose hope. God's living word is His will for you--He's our living hope.

The lonely hopelessness all around us--this according to some experts is one of the reasons why the suicide rates have skyrocketed, but you and I in Jesus praying.. can become a part of the Solution instead of part of the problem.

Please don’t lose heart no matter the intensity of the storm or what swallows you up for a time. You will get through it if you just hold on to Christ. Cling to Him, never stop. Never give up. He's a only whispered prayer away!

Jonah was in a storm, and in a great fish for a time so he quoted some Scripture in his prayer reminding God of who He is (God already knew), and specifically, Jonah quoted from the God's Psalms. How comforting is that!

Storms, big fat trails, huge testings, weird temptations, times of tribulation--these things come and then they go. Yeah, they come into the lives of reborn Christians in the forms of a calamity, a tough circumstance at school or work, or say a hardship in private or out in public. It might be a medical issue, a marital problem, a big bill to pay from spending, a legal issue, a bully on the sidewalk, or say from something else. The list goes on and on and on. Life happens rough in this sin-cursed fallen world, but there are three kinds of storms a believer will face that they can overcome them by God's help.

God in the Bible promises us: “For our present troubles are small and won’t last very long. Yet they produce for us a glory that vastly outweighs them and will last forever! So we don’t look at the troubles we can see now; rather, we fix our gaze on things that cannot be seen. For the things we see now will soon be gone, but the things we cannot see will last forever” (2 Corinthians 4:17–18 nlt).

Come to Jesus.. or come back to Jesus today. Good idea! Now is good for that. Let Him calm your storm

“He stilled the storm to a whisper; the waves of the sea were hushed.” Psalm 107:29

If you and I opt to build on the solid rock of God's word instead of on the shifting sands in tides, then our lives can make it through any tough storms of this life.

Chastisement, wise discipline, painful trails, loss, storms, testings and blessings galore.. our Heavenly Father allows some of these at times. Believer, you were born to overcome and live free from idols!

Idolatry isn’t worth your time today, though many Americans still feel it is. Not on any day of the week is it.

Believer, it really isn’t worth your allegiance ever! Married couple, it ain't worth it for you, for your family.

A marriage committed to any idol -- i.e., worship of materialism, or towards each other, having your loved one first is no good.. or to the American dream i.e., living for that big home, or property, or towards a career, a hobby, money, drinks or drugs, or towards some lover etc.

Listen, it won't be fulfilling for you! Idolatry will never satisfy you or glorify God!

Think about it. God has much better things for you. He never created you so that your life will be built on shifting sand.

black storm clouds over boats moored at beach

No need for the destruction from one or two storms of life! Don't build your house on the sand.

And he never thought up.. invented marriage so that it’ll be built on shifting sand. Build your life upon the rock, Christ Jesus instead.

He wants you, all of you, all of her. Yes, God wants your spouse too ..to build her life on the Rock. Build your life upon Christ that trustworthy solid Rock.

Why does he want this firm foundation for us, your life built on his word? To properly establish and bless our socks off. Yes to bless you, and to bless your kids too.

It’s so that married people can go the distance his way in righteousness. It’s so that families can too..go the distance with Jesus as Lord, and endure all the horrific storms of life. Let's face it, they'll show up the storms will. We've got to prepare and be ready in advance.

Sure even in our day storms arrive.

Build on the Rock - Life, Hope & Truth

God wants to bring his people together in marriage when they can more glorify his Son together than apart. He does that to be glorified, so they will praise and exalt Christ wherever they go and work in harmony totally blessed together with His worldwide plan! His Great Commission is our mission.

I say.. Worship and witness for the Lord daily -- that's what a marriage is to be all about! Put him first.

Can I tell you of my parents Kim and Betty -- they will have been sober for more than 50 years (come this November 2020). They have served what many call drunks and druggies at AA in SoCal for a really long time now. Some have come to Christ and been freed.

And my parents have been married now for over sixty years to each other, wasn't always a cakewalk for em, but they can tell you that the idol of alcohol almost ripped them off completely.

Many let it reduce them to rags, poverty -- to the streets and filthy gutters. For many to stormy-destruction. But you, build your life upon the Rock -- the Christ Jesus of the Bible.

Repentance and biblical faith in Jesus -- those are such good things for us all. Saving faith is the best kind of faith and regeneration is still God's greatest miracle he does!

selective focus photography of body of water

Grateful for my parents. God gets the credit -- all the glory for my parents and for me too. I remember repenting of my own party life in the Spring of '77. And I remember praying for them daily.

I remember witnessing to my dad in late 70s too, and then he turned and trusted Christ at Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa (they played the movie Distant Thunder and  Jimmy Kempner gave a simple Bible altar call). Dad responded to Christ there. And Christ has continued to help him to this very day, even with some loss of memory (they are in their mid 80s now).

I feel so SO grateful for Jesus’, so merciful and gracious is he! Still is.

Billy Graham Quote: “Any other foundation will fail, but Christ is a sure and steady rock to build your life on.” (10 wallpapers) - Quotefancy

I remember how the children of Israel would have severe problems; getting judged by the Lord for their disobedience. You remember too right? ..how they would then turn and cry out to God in sincere prayer. And then God would deliver them and bless them once again. But after a while they would forget him or overly focus on their blessings. They’d forget God and worship idols (life from other nations around them) all over again, thus bringing upon themselves God’s judgement again? Why don’t we believers learn so well? That was truly a viscous cycle for them!

We all need to remind.. yes, and to remember that Old Testament Israelite Bible pattern to learn from: God delights to blessed his people. Always has -- he loves us. They gradually.. slowly they would grow distracted and proud. They went off into idolatry, and then God allowed the pain to come their way often via enemies. His judgement can get our attention if we’re still living. So the Jews prayed, yes, they humbly prayed earnestly some more.

They humbled themself worshiping God only. It’s only right. So God delivered them, God blessed them. History shows us how it all repeated, but we today can learn. Questions for ya. Do you need his deliverance today?

Have you humbly prayed to him in Jesus’ name (that’s his Son)? Was it always idols connected to that pain?.. is it that way for us believers.. or just trials to get our attention again.

Trials allowed to keep us from getting proud and hardhearted, and sinful. Allowed to keep us from going off into full tilt idolatry?

What idols take up your heart’s love, your attention and your time today? What do you think about most, do most gladly, and talk about the most? Felt ticked before at God or man? I have. Yeah, I have felt mad at God at times for allowing such pain and loss -- how could he allow such unfair treatment to us (towards my sweet wife Liney and I) this getting ripped off over and over again? Not always, but it’s happened.

Storms happen here. Like with people's career, with a church ministry, with home and some kids etc. My wife has had some trials at her work before.

The expectations of future blessings for Liney were long built up in her mind by lame middle management where she worked so hard. They let her down where top management (that were very busy and so blind to what middle managers did to discourage workers of all departments there) for years said she was the very best worker in her department. That's how it goes for sold out Christians in many workplaces in this fallen world. They often get passed over, and ill treated. Forgive them and walk with Jesus.

Sure, we’ve had a whole lot of blessings mixed in with trails..with people burning us for years, but that's part of kinda normal Christianity for us Christians until the Rapture. Sometimes there are wise things you can do, and at others times.. not so much.

Check it out in history. Religious people in the world and lost kids of the world have caused problems for many.. and they often will burn Christians over and over again today too. Sinners sin cuz they're sinners -- it's their nature to. All need a new nature inside.

You can't expect (as you have perhaps done before..) that things will always go good, favorable or fairly for you here, believer.

Think about the early Church believers and how they were burned. It happened. It’s been happening in our day as well. They didn't expect to get treated any better than they were treated by the lost people of back of that day.

I’m blessed. I know I certainly don't deserve my dear wife, my decent parents for so many years of my life, my sweet grandkids, my nice house, or my income. God keeps blessing me with far more than I deserve. Felt ticked.. felt mad at God at times though, I admit it (have even to him).. for allowing so many trails.

So much pain and unfair treatment from religious and arrogant people towards us, but now I thank and praise you Jesus. What you do is for a purpose. Help us all remain faithful to you.

I had to repent and see him as he really is. Loyal, kind and good.

Wanna remember...

“For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable [for He does not withdraw what He has given, nor does He change His mind about those to whom He gives His grace or to whom He sends His call].”

At the heart of Saul’s revenge, bitterness and anger (his spiritually depraved condition) was foolish, close friends, a strange spirit to oppress him (due to his rejecting the Lord’s authority) and the fact that something that was valuable to him was lost.. or yes taken away.

His position of power meant more to him than righteousness. He lived for the applause of the masses, but they were singing their love songs to David? Have you lost something too? Has something been taken away from you—a dream, personal investments, possessions, the physical health and beauty of youth, a cherished relationship, a career, a ministry?

Long ago, I was going to marry this one girl but she bailed for more money and a red sports car offered from her adulterer dad who wanted her to ditch me and stay in college. He pressured her. Now I praise God for that -- God knew better for me, what I really needed. I was all ready to go be a missionary after 12 years of preparation, but then all my raised support fell through due to more than one TV evangelist scandal that broke.

Liney and I were paid real well working in and pastoring in an another..a second 11,000 member Dallas mega-church, but then I taught the Bible truth that no real Christian could have a demon inside him/her and we were then fired because others there believed otherwise. It was at least a two year trail for us. We were isolated, pressured, harassed, but stayed loyal to God and his Essentials. Have you ever been ousted for telling the truth or due to cruel, political nepotism? Do you ask yourself:

How could a God who really loves me allow bad things to happen in my life -- how could he allow this to happen? In the 70s how could he take something away from me that was so very dear to me? Was it due to some of my own foolish choices as well?

Did I unwittingly make an idol out of my Christian soon to be wife? Not sure. I mean that brought back the loneliness of my singleness. We live in a sin-cursed world. Adam and Eve fell in the garden and this has impacted us who have also sinned. All of creation here has suffered cuz of our falling. Our sins put Jesus up on that Cross. You know he’s 100% alive and can help us today. Live forgiven and idol-free. Ask.

May I ask you? What has God allowed in into your life, believer? Blessings, or challenges. cancer, or a time of poverty, or a rejection, or a job loss? Lost people have troubles that world against them, but we Christians experience trails the whole way through.. that work for us as we turn to Jesus in them. Romans 8-28-29 is still in the Bible. Hey Christian, we all sin though we try our best to avoid sinning. The lost, don’t avoid it all, but Jesus can forgive any of us. We all need him. Was it due to my sin that removed the blessings? Whatever it was? May I ask you: Do you love God most, worship him only.. or serve him for what He can give to you—you know.. more blessings?

Please carry an optimistic, pure, upbeat spirit in his Holy Spirit, regardless of the trials, loss, or pains. Regardless of how challenging the circumstances of life now are for you. I cannot explain it, but that makes real success more certain as you pray, seek, worship and remain faithful to Jesus Christ. Stay more focused on the Blesser rather than on his blessings or on the distractions of life. No time for distractions, hard hearts, idols or lame excuses.

Trials come to test us, will you pass the exam? In school the teacher often remains silent during testing time. God wants to know the answer to that question? Who or what do you really live for at this time? What’s your idol. What do you currently prioritize ahead of your heavenly Father, his Spirit and Christ Jesus your Lord? Then why aren't you regularly in a decent, healthy, Bible teaching Christ-honoring-church? Why haven’t you sought for one, for fellowship’s sake? Until you found one? Or have you?

What’s your master-passion in life? Only Jesus can fill up that empty void so to speak inside your heart. Nothing else satisfies us. Live for the Blesser rather than for His good blessings! Good things can become bad for us if we put them before the best thing -- that relationship with God through Christ. Are you like.. Have you been acting like Saul or like David who lost a whole lot while on the run from that creepy religious murderer of a leader that he used to look up to?

Will you backslide after the pain of rejection..or after suffering the loss of something or of someone you just love? Can you say like Job:

Give thanks with a grateful heart. Give thanks to the holy One because he’s given Jesus Christ his Son. Give thanks from the heart. Let the weak say I am strong, let the poor say I am rich because of what the Lord has done for me.. for us. Give and take away.. yep, he gives and takes away what is in the way. He meets needs and yet that’s what life seem

"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it."

Go on with God, move forward in his Spirit. Yes, walk in close fellowship with Christ ..and with spiritual Christians as close friends.. in connection with a healthy Bible teaching, soul-winning church that is led by a spiritually mature born again pastor with the right doctrine (keeping the main things the main things) and with a right spirit. You know a pastor with a shepherd’s heart  -- one who consistently practices what he preaches the word!

"To see Your lovely face

Ever before my eyes,

This is my prayer,

Make it my strong desire.

That in my secret heart

no rival love competes,

Yes, no rival throne survives,

And I serve only You."

(Sung on Sundays by my pastor Chuck Smith Sr.)

Ask God to use you again. He will. You watch, you wait, you’ll see. His great love for you hasn’t at all dissipated or gone away.

“We say little about the idols but hold up Christ crucified. He will draw them away from these vanities… Oh that we may walk humbly before Him, for we have never seen His power on this wise before.”

I remember seeing Keith Green say: Do you know who the Christian idols are? I happen to be one of them. So is Andrae Crouch, Evie and B.J. Thomas. You can even idolize your pastor. They don’t want to be idolized, they never asked for it. Remember that applause you gave me when I walked out? I didn’t hear you applaud the Lord like that anytime today.. We’re more excited about a Second Chapter of Acts concert than we are about the Second Coming! SIN!”

Remember the "Show Me the Way Lyrics" by that band called Styx?

Billy Graham used this song to win some sinners: "Every night I say a prayer in the hope that there’s a heaven And every day I’m more confused as the saints turn into sinners All the heroes and legends I knew as a child have fallen to idols of clay And I feel this empty place inside so afraid that I’ve lost my faith."

We kids are so loved. We have loving chastisement some, trails and discipline too.. from our caring Father. Think it not strange. We were born to live free.

Facing some literal or metaphorical storms of life? Are your unsaved friends facing em.. who don't yet know where to turn?

[Jesus] said to the sea, “Peace, be still!” —Mark 4:39

No waters can swallow the ship where lies the Master of the ocean, and earth, and skies. —Baker

Man, what power the Lord of creation has - even the waves obey Him (Col. 1:15-17). And guess what.. Christ still has both the right and the authority to instruct the wind and the waves we see. So interesting how this miracle caused His disciples to greatly fear instead of just trust Him more (v. 40). Why not trust Jesus and overcome your fears by feeding your faith in Him?

The new normal in our really bad economy, as well as with all the home-grown terrorism (i.e., a lady was beheaded in Oklahoma City yesterday) and distant terrorism that news commentators say is headed here ..has caused many of our friends to become very afraid. Jesus can calm the storms and protect us / them.
