Ever been all graspy, but can't find what you're looking for.. what really satisfies inside? Know of anyone like that? Sup with this selfishness? Why is it now so vogue when it's always been so foul?

Why is it all the rage, why is it the craze of our days? When did it become the fad, so popular, so very trendy and modish? I mean selfishness. IT'S REALLY UGLY!

You don't need it any. Hey Buckeroo, God loves you way too much to simply indulge your every fleeting desire or other kind of want when that's ultimately not even good for you or for others. (I'm still workin' on this one here)

"A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed." Proverbs 11:25

We can learn from good examples and bad examples right? Sure we can! Always have been able to if we want to.

Those who are selfish bad examples preach a clear message (from their life if not with words..) to us of what not to be, think or become.

The next time during this week or this month you run into a selfish person, paws and ask yourself.. Do I really want to be like that or opposite of that? Mr. Lu-Ciffer (I mean the devil) was a very selfish person when he tried to reach up to take hold of the highest position but he got put down. He craved worship and still does.

You know the way up in the Kingdom is to go down and serve people. That's what Jesus did because he's a very selfless person.

So what's the cure from ugly selfishness? It's choosing to believe in the most selfless Person and to be to live selflessly like Jesus did. Let’s follow Him closely.

We all need encouragement, so that what I want to do. I want to encourage you to live close to the selfless One. And to check your heart regularly. Ask.. am I primarily concerned with making money at the expense of ethics or others these days? Ask your friends, do you see me as a li’l gold digger? Do you see me as rapacious (aggressively or even causally greedy, just selfishly grasping daily, hoarding and livin "out on the take" rather than on the give?

What's your history with being acquisitive, or money-hungry, or avaricious.. you know, having and showing that extreme greed for wealth and more stuff.

Ask your friends, Hey what do you hear me talking about the most? Is it material gain? Is it conversations regarding "mammon" (that's the biblical term for riches. It's often used to describe the debasing influence of material wealth. When did Christ use this term. It was used by Jesus in his famous Sermon on the Mount. See Luke).

Did you used to view the lifestyle of covetous and "I"-itus aka selfishness as bad before? Did you see materialistic living or the nurturing the inverted-eyeballs as a trait of horrible character? Why did you change? Was it a change stemming from a relationship with Jesus?

How long have you been a me, myself, and I kind of person? Please turn, trust, change.. for your salke and for those around you. Simply repent in the light before you're left out in the dark

Pause and think about selfishness long and hard. Just look at all the unwanted pregnancies today and why did so many people go through with that murder? Selfishness. Why did they go and get an abortion when responsible adults are lined up and waiting to adopt a child? What's more selfish than that act of abortion? Since the passing of Roe v Wade ('til 4/2/22 there's been lots of it). In the early 70s, listen to this day.. over 63 million babies have been aborted. Again, let me put it more clearly 63,459,781 unborn children have been murdered in the womb and to me this is a horrific travesty! Why? Selfishness.

Well the baby's a burden or an inconvenience to the mother they said. What about when the mother's life is in danger but now they become so liberal in the interpretation of that. If the mother even says, well I just felt a lot of stress from the baby. Oh and you're now in some kind of danger then. So we'll just go ahead and abort it. By the way, more than 40% of women admit to having had an abortion before.

So a lot of these women that are getting these abortions abolished, have done it the murder before. And the sad thing is this, it not only is permitted in our culture today, but it's even encouraged. It shouldn't ever be.

Here are 10 steps to get rid of your depression, are you ready for em?

Step number one: Go do something for someone who has more or greater needs than you have. Yes, Go do something kind for someone who is greater needs than you have, like go to a convalescent home and visit someone who's staying there. Go under the bridges to give out sack lunches and on one of our church's missions trips and then reach out to people in love with the gospel.. that are literally living on the street.

Go to someone with more or greater needs than you have and then help them out some, that's step number one.

Okay, are you ready? So here's step number two: Go repeat step number one ..nine more times with real enthusiasm. : )

Believers are called to act in love, to to be prayerfully considerate of others in their time of need and as God leads go help them out.

We are to prioritize our actions, our relationships, our goals, and our time spent with different people among other things.  Of course the Lord get’s first place in our hearts.

Real Christians want to serve the Father in the will of God to please and glorify Christ. The Bible commands us to be a giving, kind, helpful, prayerful, loving sort of people daily. Sure, the Spirit leads us and that’s how Christ was led by the Spirit. It's how Christ still is. It’s a good witness to show kindness towards all people rather than some inverted greedy, me-first selfish, for this is the way of righteousness.

In the long-term, we will find no happiness, joy, fulfillment or success in selfishness, only isolation and despair.  True meaning and love in our lives comes from a born again close connection with the Lord, with our family too (Church and biological family members), and with our selfless service for all mankind as well.  As we take heed to the Word of God please never forget that the darkness of being selfish and self-serving-first must fade far away, for the Bible says..

“The path of the righteous is like the first gleam of dawn, shining brighter and brighter until midday. But the way of the wicked is like the darkest gloom; they do not know what makes them stumble. My son, pay attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings." Proverbs 4:18-20

Here's the reality going back to a verse I quoted James 4, let your tears for the wrong things. You've done be shed. Let there be sorrow and deep grieve. Let there be sadness. Instead of laughter, You should feel bad.

If you want to be happy, you should opt NOT to think, speak, or act selfishly. Rather you and I need to think, speak and act selflessly.

"Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: 'Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me.'” Mark 8:34

Author Stephen King had a very serious automobile accident a number of years ago. Did you read about it. I've not read his books, but he even wrote about this in an article and the title of that article was: "What you can pass on" and from that tough time this is what Stephen says to the world:

"I found out what you can't take it with. You means I've found out why I was lying in a ditch at the sight of a country road covered in mud. And blood with the tibia of my right leg pointing out the side of my jeans, like a branch of a tree taken down in a thunderstorm.

I had a Mastercard and my wallet, but when you're lying into ditch with broken glass in your hair, no one accepts. MasterCard King continues. I got a painful, but extremely valuable look at life's backstage, truths. We come in naked and broke, we may be dressed when we go out, but we're just as broke Warren Buffett.

He's going to go out, bro. Bill Gates is going out broke. Tom Hanks is going out broke. Steve King is going out broke with not a crying dime. All of the money you earn, all of the stocks you buy, all the mutual funds you trade, all of this is mostly smoke in mirrors.

It's still going to be quarter past getting late. Whether you tell the time on a Timex or a Rolex. No matter how large your bank account is, no matter how many credit cards you have, sooner or later things will begin to go wrong and the only things you have that you can really call your own is, your body, your spirit, and your mind. (Now me thinks about this, for the believer those three are the Lord’s to direct). So I want you to consider making your life one long gift to others."

Wow, amazing conclusions. I don't know yet if Stephen King even believes in Jesus Christ, but he has certainly landed squarely on some important biblical principles that tell us that it's not about us here, the world does not revolve around us and if we try to make it revolve around us, we will be very unhappy people. God in the Bible addresses selfishness...

“Whoever isolates himself seeks his own desire; he breaks out against all sound judgment.” Proverbs 18:1

“In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” Acts 20:35

"An unfriendly person pursues selfish ends and against all sound judgment starts quarrels." Proverbs 18:1

"We do not fool Him by saying we want something for His glory when secretly our motivations are selfish. We do not fool Him by saying we believe He can work miracles when inwardly we doubt He will follow through." - Michael Youssef

"That fierce imprisonment in the self is but the obverse of the self-giving which is absolute reality." - C.S. Lewis

"Self is the root, the tree, and the branches of all the evils of our fallen state." - William Law

"But Jesus answered them, 'To this very day My Father is at His work, and I too am working.' Because of this, the Jews tried all the harder to kill Him. Not only was He breaking the Sabbath, but He was even calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. So Jesus replied, 'Truly, truly, I tell you, the Son can do nothing by Himself, unless He sees the Father doing it. For whatever the Father does, the Son also does. The Father loves the Son and shows Him all He does. And to your amazement, He will show Him even greater works than these. For just as the Father raises the dead and gives them life, so also the Son gives life to whom He wishes.'” John 5:17-20

"Our own interests are still an exquisite means for dazzling our eyes agreeably." - Blaise Pascal

"To choose a career on selfish grounds is probably the greatest single sin that any young person can commit, for it is the deliberate withdrawal from allegiance to God of the greatest part of time and strength.. If your prayer is selfish, the answer will be something that will rebuke your selfishness. You may not recognize it as having come at all, but it is sure to be there." - William Temple

"Selfishness is never so exquisitely selfish as when it is on its knees. ... Self turns what would otherwise be a pure and powerful prayer into a weak and ineffective one." - A. W. Tozer

"Let this be thy whole Endeavour, this thy prayer, this thy desire, that thou mayest be stripped of all selfishness, and with entire simplicity follow Jesus only." - Thomas a Kempis

Would you pray something a kin to this?: "Lord, thanks for being right there for me today. Please God, I need You to help me to put the needs of others above my own in this (fallen mostly) loveless kinda world. I've been selfish too, but want to become more like You!!! Okay, so I shove the pride aside and plead for some help here. Lord, none can be happy with a selfish lifestyle, that me and my plans first mentality, that me being Lord of my life kinda attitude. I'm done with my way, and want to live Your way in the Spirit, not my own way, power or ingenuity. I'm done with the world's way. Specifically, help me to esteem others better than myself. I want this mind to be in me which was also in You, Jesus. Please impart into me of Your dynamite like power to walk it out. To live right, and close to You. Yes, so that I might go it You way, that You've always intended for me to go. Father God, You know I can't do this on our own. I really need Your desires first, Your divine help second, and Your wisdom too, all the way through! Yep, step by step, walking leaping and praising God. Thanks! So even at this moment, in faith pray that You would give me Your love for the unlovable. That's right -- even for my enemies who watch me, who try to pull me down or sometimes hurt me. Father, I pray that You would live through me, so I am no longer so self-absorbed as in my old life, but will put the needs of others above my own needs. That'll take some grace appropriated. O yes. It doesn't always feel so good sometimes, but You can empower any of us. Help me to put on the whole armor of God and grasp what that even means, to put on Christ and see the people as You see them. And I need Your perspective too. Danke sehr!.. in Jesus' name. Amen.

Ouch.. no, more than ouch!!!

It hurts to see people hurting, scared, in danger, and suffering illness. Have you felt some of that? Some seem so mature in dealing with it. I ain't there yet but want to learn from the One who suffered for me.

“O Joy that seekest me through pain, I cannot close my heart to thee; I trace the rainbow through the rain, And feel the promise is not vain That morn shall tearless be.” —George Matheson

Is there anything to gain from pain? Not so sure, but we can grow spiritually and get close to the Lord.. we can even learn what is really so during this hard time. Remember there is zero spiritual growth apart from the living Word.

"As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby: If so be ye have tasted that the Lord is gracious." 1 Peter 2:2-3

Trials, tribulations, temptations and testings come and go. We can even praise, pray and glorify Him while in it. Now that would seem counterintuitive. How could I?

“Speak to the suffering, and you will never lack an audience. There is a broken heart in every crowd.” ~ Joseph Parker

Remember those who are suffering in hospital rooms or all alone in a dank sorta home. Many don't have any family members or friends left.

Seems Like There's Pain In Every Pew. Yeah, In There Too Sits A Broken Lonely Heart. But In Christ There's Hope for the Hurting.

“They preached the gospel to that city and made many disciples. Then they returned to Lystra, Iconium, and Antioch, strengthening the souls of the disciples and encouraging them to continue in the faith. ‘We must endure many hardships to enter the kingdom of God,’ they said. Paul and Barnabas appointed elders for them in each church, praying and fasting as they entrusted them to the Lord, in whom they had believed.” Acts 14:22-23

"Rejoice always and delight in your faith; be unceasing and persistent in prayer; in every situation no matter what the circumstances be thankful and continually give thanks to God; for this is the will of God for you in Christ Jesus." 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Jesus (God the Son) works when we turn to, trust in, THANK AS AN ACT OF THE WILL, and even praise Him in all things. Not for all things.

We believers have trials that work for us as we turn to the Lord in them, but those of this world have troubles that sadly work against them as they reject or forget the Lord.

Do you have a friend or loved one, a mom dad, son or daughter that is sick? I just lost my young son Nathan-Michael, and almost lost my mom and some dear friends to Covid 19 (a plague, a last days birth pang so to speak). Perhaps you've lost some dear ones as well. So SO Sorry about that

Got some pain and don't get it? Have you been ill? Is your life being threatened (call the police). Do you have no so long to live according to the doc? Got cancer, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney failure, or some other critical illness that is destroying your body? We are living in a fallen world.

Pain and disease are in this world because of sin, and though we’ve all sinned the one suffering might not be suffering due to their own sin. I’ve seen people beaten and robbed and they didn’t nothing wrong at all. They were simply in a bad location and the wrong time when a selfish greedy violent thug came by.

Does he or she feels alone and forsake, I mean the one you encounter? Who else has known pain like this.. have you met anyone like this? Successively, though not necessarily chronologically, he or she feels:

• Denial (“This can’t be happening to me.”)
• Anger (“Why me, Lord?”)
• Depression (“There’s no hope.”)
• Bargaining (“Lord, get me out of this and I’ll do whatever You say.”)
• Acceptance (“May God’s will be done.”)

These feelings are not experienced once and then forgotten, but return again and again. They are not abnormal feelings, but are generally characteristic of those facing the “valley of the shadow.”

What do you say to such a person? How do you respond?

How can you really identify with and help someone who is experiencing a level of suffering and a sense of finality that is probably beyond what you have personally experienced?

You and I wanna help them right? What can we do, believer?

1. The first thing to do is simply to listen! Listen with empathy to the feelings that are shared. Encourage the person to talk. You may want to probe gently for feelings, some of which lie close to the surface while others may be more deeply submerged.

2. Pass no judgment on the feelings that are shared, even though they may be expressed in anger, self-pity, or bitterness. Just let the inquirer know that you are hearing what he or she says. Don’t appear to be arrogant by saying that you understand the depth of his or her feelings. You can’t possibly understand! But you may tell the person that you care. This can be put into words and also conveyed by the tone of your voice, your gentleness, and your capacity for feeling and identifying:

“Think too of all who suffer” (Hebrews 13:3 phillips) as if you share their pain. We might not share it, but we can listen well and try to grasp what they are going through. This is probably no time for you to introduce your own experience of pain and suffering; just stay the course in the Spirit. Keep the focus on Jesus, prayer (even perhaps silent for a bit) and what the hurting one is feeling and needing most.

3. Do not try to be some sort of “spiritual Pollyanna.” Listen, ask a few questions, find out, evaluate more. Avoid the cliches and all the typical platitudes. Don’t tell the person to “keep a stiff upper lip,” or to be an example in suffering. Do not offer false hopes about healing, or tell the individual that all illness is of the devil and with sufficient faith he or she could be healed. God may or may not heal. These are matters for the Sovereign will. What we can be sure of is that God will spiritually heal those who put their faith in Jesus Christ.

4. Don’t discourage any reference he or she may make about death. This may be a healthy conditioning of the mind for that which is inevitable. References to death can prepare the way for you, as a helper, to ask if there might be any unfinished business to attend to.

This is why we witness: to help prepare people for eternity. In a gentle spirit of kindness and concern, you may ask the inquirer, “If you were to find yourself at the gates of heaven confronted with the question, ‘On what grounds do you seek admission to God’s heaven?’ what would you say?” If indicated, explain the gospel message clearly.

If the needy hurting person aka the inquirer responds affirmatively, share “How to have assurance.” You might also read other portions of Scripture, such as Psalm 23, John 14:1–6, or 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18.

5. The commitment to Christ should prepare the way to ask whether the person has any other unfinished business, such as relationships (family, friends), financial matters (a will, perhaps), handling of details in regard to the process of dying, death itself, funeral arrangements, and disposal of the body. Encourage the inquirer to take care of all these matters, seeking either pastoral or professional advice in the process.

6. Suggest that the hurting one, or inquirer find out if his or her community has a hospice agency. These agencies specialize in providing reinforcement to patients whose diseases are considered terminal, and to their families.

Thanks for the pic Milada Vigerova

LIFE HERE ON EARTH, I MEAN IN THE PHYSICAL, IS TERMINAL. UNTIL THE RAPTURE HAPPENS 1 IN EVERY 1 PERSON WILL PASS AWAY PHYSICALLY. GOTTA BE READY FOR THAT.

DO YOU HAVE THAT KIND OF PAIN AND ILLNESS.. TERMINAL? SO SO SORRY! I HATE THAT. WE EACH CAN GAIN ETERNAL LIFE IN THE SON. RIGHT NOW IS GOOD.

Jesus is the ultimate solution for us all. God loves you and He still has a good plan. Where else or to who else will you go? He can forgive anyone and raise them from the dead. Did it before and can do it again. Check it out in the Bible.

7. Pray earnestly for the hurting worried person in need, or that inquirer that he or she might have courage and strength to be victorious in pain, committing himself or herself to Him who bore our griefs and our sorrows.

Spend some time in the Scriptures: Psalm 23 John 14:1–6 Philippians 1:21 1 Thessalonians 4:13–18.

What is the difference between God causing suffering and God allowing suffering?
What is the Christian response to the problem of suffering?
Why does God allow some believers to suffer so painfully before death?
Was there any purpose in the horrible torture that Jesus endured?
Is suffering a universal fact of the Christian life?
Why does God allow Christians to suffer? Why does God allow suffering among His people?

Can a Christian cope while suffering HOW?.. I mean with a degenerative disease such as Alzheimer’s (Alzheimers / Alzheimer), dementia, ALS, or palsy? Why do...
Why is Jesus referred to as a man of sorrows? What is the meaning of Isaiah 53:3?
Why is the suffering that Christ endured referred to as His passion?

Selfish greed can be stout sorta like a weed -- shout, Lord, it needs to be uprooted and totally pulled out.

After that ugliness get's out, then real love can sprout (up and out) and will show us the better route.

“Some people are always greedy for more, but the godly love to give!” Proverbs 21:26 nlt

Greed will cause pain. ~ Taiwanese Proverbs

Invite Jesus in and ask Him to pull it out!

An inheritance gained hastily in the beginning will not be blessed in the end.  Proverbs 20:21

Wealth gained hastily will dwindle, but whoever gathers little by little will increase it.  Proverbs 13:11

What will it take to satisfy you? What really will....really?

“One gives freely, yet grows all the richer; another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.” Proverbs 11:24

“What sorrow awaits them! For they follow in the footsteps of Cain, who killed his brother. Like Balaam, they deceive people for money. And like Korah, they perish in their rebellion.” Jude 1:11

A priest with the so called Roman church, who had heard people confess every imaginable sin and crime, including murder and adultery, said that he had never heard anyone admit to being covetous (when the Bible is taught book by book, verse by verse the people know what that sin is). He'd never heard coveting confessed but it actually made its way into God’s Top Ten—The Ten Commandments. God put it there and He wants you free from this! Admit it and quit it, simple. We confess first to God for He's the only One who forgives sin.

Greed ain't the need. How to stop being greedy and selfish:

1. Many Have Suffered, but let go of that Scarcity Mindset. Turn To Jesus And Ask Him To Uproot the Ugly Weeds Of Greed and Selfishness. He'll Fill You Up With His Holy Spirit -- It's What He Does From The Get Go
2. Build the "God is way More than Enough Mentality" In Your Mind Cuz It's True (He really loves you, lacks zip, and has no needs at all. Give All Of You To Jesus)
3. Stop Comparing Yourself, Stop Competing With Rich People. Instead Pray for Them by Name.
4. Practice Generosity Even in a Healthy Church. Pray and Have a Compassionate Generous Spirit and Heart
5. Develop a Gratitude Attitude. Say Thanks Often and Mean it. Tell God and Others how You Appreciate them.
6. Remember No Human Really Cares About Your Bank Balance or Other Investments, But The Lord Cares About You.
7. Stop Sowing To Your Old Fleshly Nature, Cease Feeding Greed and Selfishness
8. Recognize the Root of Your Fears and Selfishness. The Love Of Money is the Root of All Evil
9. Taste the Joy of Walking Close With Christ and Being Used of Him to Bless Others (Globally People need to Hear and Grasp Hold of the Gospel)
10. Live the Purpose of Passionate Worship (To One) And Of Clearly Expressing Love Both Upwards and Outwards (Towards all People)
11. Realize the Most Impact in Life Is That of Giving Away As The Spirit Leads (It's "Better To Give Than To Receive." And First of: Yourself Away to The Father, To The Son, and To The Holy Spirit)
12. Remember Those Who’ve Loved And Helped You, Believer (God Did That First While You Were Still His Enemy)
13. Remind Yourself of Those Who Didn’t Help You When They Could Have, And Why They Didn't (Fully Forgive Em And Pray For Them)
14. Visualize Your Loved Ones Who Need God's Help, Who Perhaps Need Practical Help From God's People
15. Remember You Came In With Nothing and You'll Die With Nothing (Even if the Rapture Happens First, Yet Saints Are Privileged To Hold On To Jesus Through It All. He's Always Enough)
16. Earnestly Seek God for His Compassion, Grace, Empathy and Agape for Other People. We Really Don't Know Much Of Their Battles But God Does
17. The Purpose of Having or Receiving Much Is To Enjoy God's Blessings, And To Give More As The Spirit Leads Each One Of Us (and Sometimes That Involves Monetary. We Want His Message and Kingdom To Advance)
18. Remember Believer, No Possession You Own Is Yours. It's On Loan. Ask God, What And How Can I Use What Is Today In My Hands.. To Bless With And Also To Bring You Glory
19. Focus On Jesus Most, Then On The Potential Righteous Impact for Many Other People (Our Time Here To Reap A Harvest And Be Used Of God To Disciple Others Is Short)
20. Redefine Your Worth (As The World Estimates). It's Not At All Defined By What You've Earned Or Gained (The World Daily Wants To Define You By Your Amount Of Perishable Toys and Stuff). You Already Have Huge Worth To God Who Made You In His Own Image
21. View Money, Assets And All Investments Only As Temporary Tools For God's Kingdom-Expansion. You Are Here To Praise and All-Out-Worship The King Of kings and To Win, Edify, Encourage, and Minister to People In Need

Abraham Was Blessed to Be a Blessing, And You Are Too, Believer.

The blessings that God gives to each of us are intended to be enjoyed and possibly to be shared as He lead you to. Pray and go back often to ask for the details on what He would have you do.

".. but the one who did not know it and did things worthy of a beating, will receive only a few [lashes]. From everyone to whom much has been given, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more." Luke 12:48 amp

"For the love of money is the first step toward all kinds of sin. Some people have even turned away from God because of their love for it, and as a result have pierced themselves with many sorrows." 1 Timothy 6:10 tlb

"Love is the doorway through which the human soul passes from selfishness to service." ~ Jack Hyles

Do you remember the story of Balaam? He was a whack-prophet who was greedy for gold? Felt he had to have it! And he was hired by the Moabites to bring a curse upon Israel, but we are to love Israel and to pray for them.

But Balaam was NOT a non-profit prophet, no NO, but he was a prophet scheming for personal profit like many of them today. Yes, so many are still around today, they seem to be the same yesterday, today and forever like pressuring, squeezing and workin' the people on Telethon Tuesday!

And as Balaam was preparing to go carry out his stupid assignment, God addressed him. Yes, God spoke to him and said, “You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed” Numbers 22:12

So did Balaam take heed to God’s words? No, he ultimately ignored God’s command. Then as he was making his way in disobedience to God, the donkey he was riding refused to go any further. So he began to beat the poor donkey. And when the two reached an impasse, God opened the donkey’s mouth, who turned and said to Balaam, “Am I not your donkey on which you have ridden, ever since I became yours, to this day? Was I ever disposed to do this to you?”

The animal had more sense than her master did. The Lord opened Balaam’s eyes spiritually, and standing in front of his donkey was an angel with his sword drawn. The angel essentially said, “It is a good thing for you that your donkey stopped. You were about to be killed.”

What was it that made this man so very lame spiritually? It was greed that kept Balaam out of harmony with God and His agape love, and selfish greed can do the same with us any day of the week. We can become so selfishly focused on material things that they become more important to us than anything else.

If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?

What does the Bible say about greed?

What are some verses that address greed?

Why is the love of money the root of all kinds of evil?

You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.  James 4:3

Remember a number of years ago, when U2 released an album called “All That You Can’t Leave Behind.” Well, the fact is that when our lives come to an end, we’ll leave everything behind.

Please don’t let anything or anyone keep you out of harmony with the love of God. Never let selfishness or greed take you downwards.

These people are grumblers and faultfinders; they follow their own evil desires; they boast about themselves and flatter others for their own advantage. But, dear friends, remember what the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ foretold. They said to you, In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires. These are the people who divide you, who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit." See Jude 1:14-21 #emph.mine

"But these men mock and curse at anything they do not understand, and like animals, they do whatever they feel like, thereby ruining their souls. Woe upon them! For they follow the example of Cain who killed his brother; and like Balaam, they will do anything for money; and like Korah, they have disobeyed God and will die under his curse. When these men join you at the love feasts of the church, they are evil smears among you, laughing and carrying on, gorging and stuffing themselves without a thought for others. They are like clouds blowing over dry land without giving rain, promising much, but producing nothing. They are like fruit trees without any fruit at picking time. They are not only dead, but doubly dead, for they have been pulled out, roots and all, to be burned. All they leave behind them is shame and disgrace like the dirty foam left along the beach by the wild waves." Jude 1-10-13 tlb

You’ve probably heard of Trivial Pursuit, the board game right? Well “trivial pursuit” would be a really good description of how a lot of people spend their lives today. They selfishly expend all their energies in the pursuit of things that are, in the end, really trivial. But the end, all that will be left is that which is eternal.

One day our lives on this earth will end, and the question will be this: How have we spent our existence? Will it have been on pursuing trivial things? Or, will we have laid up for ourselves treasures in Heaven?

That is what Jesus addressed when someone said to him, “Teacher, please tell my brother to divide our father’s estate with me” (Luke 12:13 nlt). Man, talk about saying the wrong thing at the wrong time. Jesus had been dealing with a very serious issue. He had just cast a demon out of a person, but the religious leaders alleged that Jesus actually had done this by the power of Satan. This caused Jesus to issue a very stern warning.

While all this was happening, a man apparently made his way up through the crowd, to the front, and blurted out his off-the-wall demand. Jesus used this as a springboard to talk about what the man’s real problem was. Jesus, being God, could look directly into his heart and clearly see this man’s greed. He was full of covetousness.

Jesus told him, “Friend, who made me a judge over you to decide such things as that? ..Beware! Guard against every kind of greed. Life is not measured by how much you own” Luke 12:14–15 nlt

Essentially Jesus was saying, “Who put me in charge of your problems? I’m not here to settle these petty disputes. You’re missing the big picture. In fact, when I look into your heart, I see what is really motivating you anyway. It’s greed.”

Jesus wasn’t interested in being Judge and jury or in acting like Judge Judy even that day. He had other things to do, a more important mission to accomplish. Jesus used this occasion as an opportunity to talk to his listeners about what really counts, what ultimately matters in life. Do you have a relationship with God, do you have right relationships with people? You can. Jesus told them all a story about a rich man who had seriously misplaced priorities.

There are commendable things about this man. There was nothing wrong with the fact that he was so successful in this world by their estimation, nor in farming (we all need food God provides via the farmers who produce it via their hard work and trust..), or that he had a bumper crop and needed bigger barns to house his harvest. The problem was that he gave no thought to God.

Jesus didn’t say the rich man did things through deceit or treachery or by taking advantage of others. The problem was that within his success, he didn’t think of God or of the needs of others at all.

It’s understandable when children don’t really plan for the future. But when people get older like into their 30s, 40s, 50s 60s and certainly beyond that, it’s so foolish if they don’t plan for what’s ahead.

So many people will take out every insurance policy available – life insurance, medical insurance, fire insurance, and so forth – but they won’t give a single thought to their own eternal insurance and whether their lives are right with God via His Son Jesus.

The man in Jesus’ story went out and made money. But those possessions were beginning to possess him. Has that ever happened to you? They were becoming more and more important to him than anything or anyone else. Even more than God meant to Him. He was allowing greed and covetousness to ruin his life.

When John D. Rockefeller was the richest man in the world, someone reportedly asked him, “How much is enough?”

He replied, “Just a little bit more.”

Do you personally need a little bit more to make it, or a lot more (some people do need more practical things to help them survive), or do you just feel like you need more and really need a satisfying relationship with God?

That’s the perfect definition of someone who is filled with greed. In fact, the Bible portrays greed as a dividing line between righteous and evil people: “Some people are always greedy for more, but the godly love to give!” Proverbs 21:26 nlt

After pretty much having all this world could offer, King Solomon wisely concluded, “Those who love money will never have enough. How meaningless to think that wealth brings true happiness!” Ecclesiastes 5:10 nlt

This is why the apostle Paul warned, “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil. And some people, craving money, have wandered from the true faith and pierced themselves with many sorrows” 1 Timothy 6:10 nlt

This verse is often misquoted to say, “Money is the root of all evil.” No, the Bible says no such thing. Rather, it says the love of money is the root of all evil. It comes down to our attitudes.

Understand what the Bible is saying. It is not a sin to be successful in business or to make a good living. However, when we become obsessed with it, when we are willing to do whatever it takes to get there, when we find ourselves bending every effort to grasp it, when it becomes the most important thing in life, then that pursuit has taken the place of God in our lives.

The Bible warns that covetousness is idolatry. That greedy desire to have more actually can become a god in our lives and choke out spiritual growth.

Jesus was not condemning the practice of saving or preparing for the future. Nor was he condemning this man for providing for his family, assuming that he had one. This man’s problem was that he didn’t think about his spiritual future, and he didn’t rise to the responsibilities wealth can bring.

A good reason for tithes and offerings? As we obey God He helps us keep greed in check--away from our hearts. Everything we have in life has been given to us by God, including the breath we draw in our lungs. Has He yet freely given you His forgiveness and eternal life? Have you turned and trusted in Christ to wash you clean from sin. We’ve all blown in at different times. “For all have sinned and fallen short..” Ask, he will bless you today. Don’t put it off.

Jesus said, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need” Matthew 6:33 nlt

God will take care of us if we simply come to Him and keep our priorities right. And what should our priorities be? Yes, Christ should be first as Lord of all in everything.
